Streamlined Online Application Process for UAE Freelancer Visas

Freelancers seeking a UAE visa can now rejoice as the UAE Federal Bureau of Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security (ICP) has introduced a groundbreaking initiative. This move brings significant advantages to virtual work visa applicants, eliminating the need for physical presence in the UAE during the application process. The entire process can now be conveniently completed online.

This recent development empowers individuals aspiring to work in the UAE by enabling them to undergo the application process from their current location. The virtual business stay visa, valid for a year (365 days), can be renewed according to the UAE Government’s updated visa regulations. Aspiring visa holders can access the ICP website or use the Smart Application (UAEICP) for seamless visa submissions. Following approval, applicants must enter the UAE within 60 days to finalize the residency visa application. It’s essential to adhere to this timeframe, as failure to do so will result in the voiding of the permit.

Eligibility for the Virtual Work Residency visa requires a passport with at least six months’ validity, an up-to-date photograph, and a valid insurance policy. Self-employed individuals aiming to qualify must present a bank statement demonstrating a minimum income of Dh360,000 or the equivalent in another currency over the past two years. 

Additionally, applicants are required to submit their previous month’s payslip along with three months’ worth of bank statements. Applications not meeting these prerequisites will automatically face online rejection after 30 days. It’s important to note that any fees and financial guarantees will be refunded if the ICP rejects the file, and if the file is returned three times for the same reason.

Applying for the Virtual Work Program incurs a fee of AED 350 per person. Upon approval, all applicants will receive entry clearance and pertinent details via email.

This forward-looking policy adjustment brings benefits to both individuals and companies. It grants individuals greater control over their work arrangements while enabling companies to mitigate employee retention risks.

The policy’s rationale, as articulated by the minister, lies in the anticipation of heightened productivity within the labor market. This productivity surge is poised to enhance individuals’ value in the global work landscape. The introduction of flexible work permits is also projected to generate up to 24,000 job opportunities by 2024, as companies tap into and retain a more diverse talent pool.

The UAE’s objective is to bolster this trend by attracting a more varied workforce and capital through an encouraging regulatory framework. This initiative underlines the UAE’s commitment to remaining a dynamic hub for international talent and business growth.
